Tilt or buttons? The endless mobile racing debate
Every time we review a racing game, the same fight breaks out in the office. Half of us swear by tilt controls, the other half reach straight for on-screen buttons. So we decided to actually pin down why.
Tilt feels more immersive, no question. When it's tuned well, like in Neon Drift Rally, your whole body leans into the corner and it's fantastic. The problem is consistency: bad lighting, a bumpy train, a reclining position, and suddenly your steering is garbage.
Buttons are the reliable choice. They work anywhere, in any position, and they never surprise you. The tradeoff is that they can feel a little detached, especially in games built with tilt in mind first.
Our honest conclusion: play with tilt when you're settled and steady, switch to buttons the moment your environment gets unpredictable. Any racer worth your time lets you swap on the fly, and if it doesn't, that's a mark against it.
