Can a phone really carry a full RPG?

April 1, 2026 · Marek Novotný

For years I told people that serious RPGs don't belong on phones. The screen's too small, the sessions too short, the menus too fiddly. Ashen Hollow spent about ten hours proving me wrong.

The trick, it turns out, is designing for the format instead of shrinking a console game down. Combat in Ashen Hollow is turn-based, so nothing depends on twitch reflexes or precise thumbs. You can pause, think, and put your phone away mid-fight.

Menus are the other half of the puzzle. The developers clearly agonized over how to fit deep systems onto a small screen, and it shows. Everything is a couple of taps deep, nothing is buried, and the fonts are actually readable.

So yes, a phone can carry a full RPG, but only when the whole thing is built around the way people actually use their phones. Ashen Hollow is proof, and I hope more studios take the hint.
